Monsoons

Arizona monsoons can come on quickly, with weather morphing into anything from high winds, heavy rain, lightning and thunderstorms — or even a “haboob,” a sudden and unpredictable dust storm. As with any climate challenge, it is important to stay tuned to NOAA warnings and your local radio stations, and use any weather-monitoring mobile apps. Monsoons and dust storms are typically brief — most lasting less than an hour. If possible, stay inside until the dust storm passes. If you are driving, find a safe spot to pull off the road until you have full visibility. Do not stop in traffic lanes, and exit the highway if possible to do so. Check with weather authorities before setting back out.

If the monsoon includes heavy rain, follow the protocols established in the Thunderstorms & Lightning section.
